With the current trends in email delivery management, even companies that send permission-based (opt-in) email may find themselves blacklisted.
The major email blacklist organizations can have a significant, negative impact on legitimate marketers who, for whatever reason, find themselves with an IP that is suddenly blacklisted.
Often, the IP that is blacklisted is inherited from another site that was blacklisted, or is part of a shared server where another website was blacklisted.
In some cases, your IP can be blacklisted due to a single complaint, which may or may not be legitimate or fair.
If you are not monitoring the blacklists, you may not even realize some customers are not receiving their emails, until you get a complaint from one of them. At this point, it may easily take a week or more to get removed from the blacklist.
It's always better to become aware of the problem before your customers do, so that you can engage corrective action proactively.
